2016 HG: Is it time to think about some kind of HG organization?

Is it time to think about some kind of HG organization?
A number of people are working on things to improve and promote the hypergrid.  In previous articles, I have reported on these efforts and provided a preliminary organization to help us keep track of whee we are and where (I think) we need to go.  Here I consider the need for an organization to promote and organize this effort.

Possible organizations

Existing plans in Opensimulator Wiki

Opensimulator Wiki--Grid Associations  This is a wiki page to draft out the idea of grid associations and eventually have a list of associations.

What is a grid association?

  • A group of grid owners working together to achieve common goals.

Why have grid associations?

  • Homogeneous experience with standardized quality for users that teleport between grids.
  • Hypergrid technology enables grid associations linking up in world.
  • Shared quality goals.
  • Same grid version.
  • Shared user base.
  • Teaming up for 24/7 maintenance.
  • Collecting improvement ideas and bugs to OpenSimulator dev team.
  • Shared assets for grid association sharing a theme.
  • Together baked terrain offering seamless map over the entire grid associations hyper grid.
  • Working on contents like avatars meshes
  • Mutualising ressources
  • Working on databse replication (grid A /B <> B/A )
What types of grid associations there could be?

  • Theme: urban, nature, rpg, scifi
  • Hobby: climbing, diving
  • Business
  • Game

Grids looking for cooperation

  • Two grids have listed themselves

Grid associations -- If you have formed a public grid association you can add it to this list

  • Six associations are listed
  • Two associations give facebook links as their home page.  I could not reach the given links
  • Three associations give web pages.  I was not able to access any of the pages.
  • One association gives a Google community.  I could reach the link, but it is private,

Suggestions by Tom Frost

Tom Frost suggested twp organizations, already in existence, that might be interested in helping to coordinate the efforts of HGProjects.  Avacon and Hypergrid association.

Avacon

AvaCon  Mission:
  • 'Building community in the metaverse. | Building the metaverse community. | Building the metaverse.'
where 'metaverse' is defined as: 'The Metaverse is created by the convergence of virtually enhanced physical reality and physically persistent virtual space. Conceptually, it is a future iteration of the internet, made up of persistent, shared, 3D places linked into a perceived virtual universe.[1]'

As such, HGProjects or the HG Chamber of Commerce can be viewed as a sub-task of the broader mission.

Hypergrid Association

A German-based 'verein' (association) founded earlier this year associated with hypergrid.org.+Lena Vanilli is heavily involved with this. In the near future, the goal is to have the metropolis grid be separated from 'hypergrid.org' and have 'hypergrid.org' become all about the hypergrid and not the specific grid.

Opensimulator Hypergrid Collective

Opensimulator Hypergrid Collective is a Google+ group with this objective:
This group is a collective of grids that wish to work together to make a larger community by joining grids together for easier access and information transfer between grids.
This is the most promising lead I have found.  At least the link is live and when I asked to join, I got a prompt response from a person I know.  And the community has a number of people I know in it.  The most recent post, however, dates to Fall, 2014, so it has been rather inactive recently.
-
Since I have been posting some articles about a potential Hypergrid or OpenSim organization, I will be posting links in this community.
-
Here is an item that the collective may want to consider:

Selby's comments

I raised the issue as something we need to think about. I, too, think we need an overall organization.  Evidently a number of others have thought so too, and have tried to develop such an organization.  Evidently also, the organizations have not been sustainable.
-
The previous efforts offer a note of caution to my previous suggestion for something like a hypergrid Chamber of Commerce.  I will not recommend doing the same thing over and expecting different results.  Rather I am reviewing the idea to see if I can come up with a more promising suggestion.
-
One thing we need to aim for is to be more inclusive.   Note the mission statement for OHC above:  "This group is a collective of grids..."   In this review I have seen quite a bit of language that suggested that the organization was primarily for grid owners and leaders.  I doubt that the intent was really to exclude other interested people but the language may convey that.
-
I think we need to work towards and organization that includes all (or most of) the stakeholders in hypergrid.  That would include not just grid owners, but the many communities, commercial activities, and non-profits.  The commercial grids, the markets, and the content creators are the most obvious part of the commercial activities, but in the future, there may be others.  Worlds End Estates-Oakwood offers rentals: that business might grow as it has in other grids.

Organize the communities

For the present, the best prospect I see for organizing lies in the communities.  They are already organized and active.  They may see values in teaming with other communities.  New Media Arts, for example, has long had a connection with Seanchai and is discussing connections with other communities.  This fits with other themes I have been writing about.

Communities are increasingly becoming grid-independent as they shift from inworld groups to Google+ communities for their communication.  Furthermore, people can easily be in multiple communities and so bring many people and projects together.  I expect to post more articles about organizing by communities.  I will post links in Opensimulator Hypergrid Collective (unless they object) and elsewhere.   Meanwhile:
Communities of the virtual worlds, let's get together!
