2016 HG: PEOPLE: Virtual communities: are you setting up feeder lines to bring in more people? HGProject

Virtual communities: are you setting up feeder lines
to bring in more people to your community?
Social media offers free feeder lines to your virtual world.  Unsolicited testimonials to the fun your participants are having in your community.  Pictures and videos that tell about what people are doing in your community.  P2P conversations with people in the community.   But nothing will bring people unless you show them how to get there.  So think of feeder lines as just the start of the entry path.

The entry path
  • Feeder sites: attract and link to main web page
  • Entry web page: show how to enter and get started
  • Welcome site: help for newcomers to community
  • Community:  show activities they can start immediately or soon

          Feeder sites

          • May be social media groups or communities with interests that fit yours.
          • Search for them in Google+, Facebook, or other social media.
          • Maybe blogs or videos relating to community activities.
          • Build traffic to your blog about virtual worlds
          • Google search on terms commonly used in your community.
          • You can also start your own.  But you have to build audience.
          • Existing sites come with existing audience (check the size).
          • Join some of these, follow the posts, watch for opportunities to comment.
          • Post about your virtual community.  Watch for the reaction.
          • Don't be bothered by rejection.  Some people don't like new ideas.
          • If you get some interest, this site may work as a feeder for you.
          • A site is especially good if it will let people post pictures and videos.
          • It is even better if it makes that posting easy.

          Develop a feeder site

          • Select a target.  Something that you control and will show your community well.
          • Could be an entry website or a blog or both.
          • You can have other authors on your blog, but stay in control.
          • Make sure every post carries a link to your target(s).
          • Get others in the community to post on your feeder sites.
          • They will often forget to put in the links, so check an add them in comments.
          • In a blog you own, you may be able to add them by an edit.
          • Try to get them to use words that mark your community, especially in titles.
          • "I had a good time yesterday" is not going to get readers.
          • SEO tips for promoting your virtual community (Not how to cheat with SEO)

Entry web page: show how to enter and get started

          • New Media Arts is developing an entry path on its main web site
          • ETA: April 15.

Welcome site: help for newcomers to community

Community: show activities they can start immediately or soon

          • Join the main group. Introduce yourself there.  Ask questions.
          • Read the calendar.
          • We will probably post project notices at the Welcome Center
          • You probably don't have to be registered in Kitely to get notices.
