2015 HELP: Kitely academy. Let's think Hypergrid.

Kitely academy.  Let's think Hypergrid.
Updated 2/10/2015
There is a discussion in the Kitely Forums about developing a Kitely Academy.  I like the idea of an academy for Opensim/hypergrid and would like to see it in Kitely.  But let's expand the thinking to use the advantages of virtual worlds and the hypergrid.  Let's think outside of the old box we have carried over from the old world.

To think outside the box, first find the box:  Learning requires:

  • a building (the edifice complex of academia)
  • a teacher
  • a classroom with students listening to a teacher
  • a set schedule when the students and the teacher all meet

A glimpse outside the box: Learning in the new century requires:

  • no building, just a device capable of interactive use of the internet.
  • a guide on the side instead of a sage on the stage.
  • any place the student can use that device mentioned above.
  • any time the student wants to learn something.
See below for updated suggestions and information about Kitely Academy

Updated suggestions and information about Kitely Academy

I am gathering items about Kitely Academy and similar plans.  At present, I am posting them here by updating this article.  Later I will organize them into another article.

Roxy Gellar:  I just found out that there is a Blender class Sundays on LIttleGrid. It's the same instructor as the one who teaches for Builder's Brewery in SL
Dot Matrix:  What if the academy includes a hypergrid port with portals and posters for classes already set up elsewhere? That would help to share and support the work across OpenSim.
Roswenthe Blackwell: Has started a Google+ group about this:  Virtual University on Kitely
Selby Evans: Recommends the development of skills-based learning objectives and certification criteria.

Some new principles for learning in the new century

  • Listening is not learning.
  • Talking is not teaching.
  • You learn what you practice.
  • If you learn by listening, all you can learn is how to listen.
  • Or maybe you can learn how to talk about the subject.
  • If you learn by doing, you will learn how to do.
  • Collaborative learning is not cheating unless you make it so.

But where do you get that guide on the side?

Possible ways to provide the guide on the side

  • Inworld instant message group.  With enough capable members,
  • most queries may get quick answers.
  • (How reliable are group IMs across Hypergrid?)
  • Maybe cite good times to query: Evening, Germany; Evening U.S.
  • Outworld instant message group  Google+ community or the like
  • Maybe more reliable than inworld.
  • Easier to check for queries or answers.
  • Easier to send screenshots and weblinks.
  • Persistent, can wait for guides to provide answers.
  • Easier to review for previous answers.
  • Scheduled guided tours.  "Tours are available at these times."
  • "Register for a tour and a guide will be here to help you."
  • Guides might represent particular communities:
  • "Sailing community guides are available at these times:"
  • "Writing community guides are available at these times:"
  • Look for ways to compensate guides.  TBD
  • Could guides promote their products?
  • Could guides sell Do-it-Yourself Kits with live help sessions included?
  • Could guides do (and get paid for) inworld advertising?

But you still need places

  • For workshops, where a guide could be available part time.
  • For sandboxes, where people could build, share information, and help each other.
  • For organized resource givers: textures, sounds, utility scripts and objects.
  • For meetings and Q&A sessions.
  • One potential source of places:

How to handle a Hypergrid address

From any Hypergrid-enabled grid, paste the address into the address bar of Firestorm and press enter. Or paste it into the world map search bar of any viewer, search, and click Teleport when the destination is found. If it doesn't work, don't give up. Try again later. Some hypergrid destinations are offline part of the day.
If you get an address that looks like this:
hg.francogrid.org:80:Residence-09:/119/128/190    paste it into the address bar of Firestorm, see if it takes you to the exact coordinates.
