Owning a home in Second Life

Do you need a house?  Do you need land?  Read this first:
-
How people have homes in Second Life
  • Rent
  • Linden Home (premium membership)
  • Buy a home, put it on your land
  • Use a free home on your land
  • Use a free home on a sandbox
-
Rent
You need money:
Find: Search on terms like rent, rental, house
Cautions: Landlord may not keep paying for the land or may not treat you honestly
Actons: Start with a week's rent or less. Deal with established rental estates

Established rental estates
Linden Home
Newcomers may want land because they want a house and yard. If you have a premium membership, you can have those things along with the premium membership. See this webpage:
-
After I get a Linden home, can I change to another kind of Linden home?  Here is how:
  • If there are things you own there (house and yard), take them into your inventory
  • At your home, click on World, About Land, General tab, Abandon Land.
  • Wait a few hours for the database to be updated
  • You can then claim a new Linden Home in the same way you did with the first one.

How do you get Lindens in Second Life? Summary

-
Find: Search on terms like. house, home.
***************
Use a free home on a sandbox
You can get free houses at various freebie places such as: Freebie Galaxy
Find sandboxes in the Destination Guide
You can't leave it there for more than a few hours, but that may be enough for you at the start.
-
Prim limits
People entering Second Life for the first time usually start with a plot of 512 square meters. That comes along with a premium membership.  That land will allow 117 prims.  So some of the common questions come from exceeding the prim limit, "Why can't I rez the bed I bought."

Furniture
To shop for furniture, search on
furniture
Classifieds and furniture will be the most productive sub-categories.

Educators looking to rent might consider Timbucks, an educator only sim. I've had a home here for a few years.... low rent, good prim allowance, and super accommodating landlord who is a college prof. http://slurl.com/secondlife/Timbucks/124/246/23
